Today I was the gaffer (member in charge of lighting) for a parody music video. I won’t release any other info until later but let’s say it’s an interesting song… but I will share some behind the scenes photos. It was an extremely fun shoot but at times extremely frustrating and tiring. Ling Mai of MightyMayoFilms was camera operator and Marlene Rhein was director. Marlene is an incredibly accomplished director. Having directed Tupac’s last music video, “All About U” and Amy Winehouse’s “Fuck Me Pumps”. We were honored to be a member of her team.
The call time was 6AM at the Brooklyn Bridge. (I woke up at 4AM to get there via MTA >_>) Here we shot the star of the music video, Jeffery Hernandez. Jefferey is a comedian based at the Laugh Lounge in the Lower East Side and is a CRAZY dude. This music video is based off one of his bits that he performs that parodies rapper Jay-Z. In this scene we mimicked the BK Bridge shot from Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”. A member of the team ended up finding a couple of drunk girls to extra as crazed fans. Lawl.
After that we went to LES to shoot a breaking dancing scene and entourage scene. As you can tell from the photos the entourage was funny as hell. I seriously couldn’t contain my laughter during the shooting. After those two scenes the best scene of the day came next. Ling, Marlene, and I rode on the flatbed of a pickup truck to film Jeffery ride his bicycle down the streets of LES. Jeffery was so amazing at improv the entire day. I died.
The last scene were indoors at the Laugh Lounge itself. These were the most annoying to shoot. Setting up lighting an figuring out how to light was terribly time consuming and tedious. I wanted to collapse from the exhaustion and annoyances. But the rest of the crew and I kept on going until the end. Luckily the last scene was rather funny itself. Marlene was actually inspired from a magazine spread she found while looking through rap magazines. Great angle and lots of laughs during that last scene.
All in all it was a very exciting and fun day. Tiring but rewarding at the same time. Best of all we got paid for our efforts! I hope to work again with Marlene in the future!
